In some rare cases after MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) is enabled for your account, you may find that you are unable to authenticate yourself within your desktop Outlook application when off campus. This manifests in a window opening within Outlook which prompts for your username and password, but it won’t accept your GTIIT password. This is where you need to use App Password.
- Use web browser to access https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info, sign in with your GTIIT username and password
- Click + Add sign-in method
- Select App password
- Click Add
- Create an easy-to-remember name for it and Next
- You will be provided a roughly 16 character password password that can be used as alternate option for your Outlook login authentication.
The password will not be shown again so make sure you copy and paste it somewhere safe.
- To ensure that this only needs to be done once, please double-check that the check box that states “Remember my credentials” is checked before click the OK button. Once this is set properly, it should not need to be done again.
- When using app passwords, it's important to remember:
- App passwords are autogenerated, and should be created and entered once per app.
- There's a limit of 40 passwords per user. If you try to create one after that limit, you'll be prompted to delete an existing password before being allowed to create the new one.
