To meet the increasing demand from GTIIT staff, especially research faculty members, we've been working hard to enhance printing compatibility with Linux distributions. While there are many Linux variants, most follow similar standards. Below is a working approach to set up GTIIT Staff printing service on Ubuntu (22.04.5 as an example). Please make sure your system is connected to the GTIIT network without any third-party VPN running on the background.
- Install
Required Packages by opening a terminal and install CUPS (Common UNIX
Printing System) and SMB client utilities:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install cups smbclient system-config-printer
- Ensure the
CUPS printing service is enabled and running:
sudo systemctl enable cups
sudo systemctl start cups
- Open Ubuntu Settings → Printers → Additional Printer Settings.
-
Select
"Windows Printer via SAMBA" under Network Printer.
- Enter the GTIIT printer queue URL:
For Staff-Print-Q: smb://print.gtiit.edu.cn/Staff-Print-Q
For Staff-ColorPrint-Q: smb://print.gtiit.edu.cn/Staff-ColorPrint-Q - Select "Set authentication details now", and enter your GTIIT credentials in the format: gtiit\username (where "username" is your GTIIT email username).
-
Click Forward to proceed.
- Enter the GTIIT printer queue URL:
- Configure Printer Drivers:
- Wait a few seconds for the system to search for drivers.
- Keep the default option "Select printer from database", choose Generic, and click Forward.
- Select the appropriate PCL
6/PCL XL driver:
For Staff-Print-Q: Select Generic PCL 6/PCL XL Printer Foomatic/pxlmono[en].
For Staff-ColorPrint-Q: Select Generic PCL 6/PCL XL Printer Foomatic/pxlcolor[en].
-
Provide a Printer Name, Description, and Location,
and click Apply.
It is highly recommended to use the standard names Staff-Print-Q and Staff-ColorPrint-Q to ensure consistency across Windows, macOS, and Android platforms.
- Click "Print Test Page" to confirm. If a notification appears
saying "Printing" followed by "Printing completed", your printer setup
is successful. You can now collect your
printouts from the multifunctional printer machine in NC or SC campuses.
